1

Identify the following tools and know their use:

1a

Hammer

Hammers come in many varieties designed for various tasks. We suggest learning about a few different types like sledge, claw, finishing, roofing, ball-pinion etc. Hammers can be used to pound nails, drive or pound things, break or shape things and in the case of claw hammers, remove nails.

1b

Screwdriver, regular

The most common screwdriver is the slotted. It has a straight end to fit in the slot of the screw.

1c

Screwdriver, Phillips

Perhaps the next most common is the Philips (the inventor's name) which looks like a + sign when viewed from the bottom. Also popular is the Robertson with square end. Philips and Robertson screwdrivers are less likely to slip than slotted, which is why nearly all screws you would use a drill on are these two styles.

1d

Pliers, regular

1e

Pliers, needle nose

1f

Wire cutters

1g

Vise grip

1h

Square

1i

Level

A level is a tool that contains one to three bubble gages. When the bubble is in the middle the level is level. Better levels have horizontal, vertical and diagonal gages. Levels are also useful for drawing straight lines (like a big ruler) and quickly squaring before cutting.

1j

Saw, hand

1k

Saw, hack

1l

Saw, circular

1m

Drill and bits Plumb line

2

Demonstrate ability to drive at least six nails out of ten into wood, without bending the nail.

Make sure the nail is positioned straight to start. Then practice until you are proficient.

3

Using a drill of your choice, drill a hole in wallboard and install an anchor (molly) and screw.

4

Install two screws in wood. Show ability to use both regular and Phillips types of screw drivers.

The unstated point here is consider pre-drilling your hole for best results.

5

Demonstrate ability to rewire a simple plug--as installing a new plug on a lamp cord or repairing an existing one.

6

Using square and handsaw, demonstrate ability to saw a board at right angles.

7

Describe how to hang a picture, including the tools you would use. What would you do differently to hang a 35-pound picture than you would to hang a 2-pound picture?

8

Prepare a simple tool box. Use of actual tools is encouraged, but pictures may be used instead.

8a

What points should be considered in selecting a container for your tools?

8b

Why is it important to buy good quality tools even if it means fewer tools?

8c

Give at least one use for each tool you select for your tool box.

8d

How should you care for your tools?

9

What should you do if you discover a broken water pipe?

9a

If electricity is involved?

9b

If electricity is not involved?

10

Demonstrate how to replace a worn faucet washer.

11

What should you do if a drain becomes clogged?

11a

What is a plunger? How would you use it to open a clogged drain?

11b

What precautions should be taken when using chemical drain openers?
