1. Tener la especialidad de Natación II.

2. Conocer las «reglas generales» para la navegación.

3. Saber cómo las condiciones meteorológicas y las condiciones de alto oleaje pueden afectar a la seguridad y el desempeño de la vela.

4. ¿Qué precauciones de seguridad deben seguirse cuando se navega a vela?

5. Con la ayuda de un amigo, hacer lo siguiente:

a. Poner un velero en marcha desde un muelle, amarre o playa.

b. Ajustar adecuadamente las velas en las siguientes condiciones:

i. Viento en contra

ii. Viento a través

iii. Viento largo

iv. Viento ceñido

v. Downwind

c. Change tack by coming about and by gybing.

d. Return the sailboat to a dock, mooring, or beach, and prepare it for being unattended.

6. Know how to tie and use the following knots in sailing:

a. Square knot.

b. Bowline.

c. Clove hitch.

d. Figure-eight.

e. Two half-hitches.

f. Mooring hitch.

7. List ways to care for your sailing equipment throughout the year.

8. Have a knowledge of at least 20 terms used in sailing and their meanings.

9. Identify at least 15 parts of a sailboat.

10. Demonstrate the rescue of a person overboard.

11. Demonstrate what to do when a sailboat capsizes.
